Ostenil
Ostenil is a hyaluronic‑acid (sodium hyaluronate) viscosupplement used to improve joint lubrication and reduce pain. At our clinic we apply it specifically for foot and ankle problems where clinical assessment suggests benefit. We tailor product choice to the site: Ostenil / Ostenil Mini for the 1st MTPJ, Ostenil Plus for the ankle, and Ostenil Tendon for tendon‑related pathology when appropriate.
How it works
• Mechanism: increases hyaluronic acid in the joint or peritendinous space to improve lubrication and reduce friction.
• Goal: symptom relief (pain reduction) and improved function; not a guaranteed cure for structural disease.
• Product notes: Ostenil Plus has a higher HA concentration and stabiliser (mannitol) and is used where a single‑injection protocol is preferred; Ostenil Mini is suited to small joints.
Who we consider for treatment
• Primary candidates: patients with localized joint pain at the 1st MTPJ or ankle where conservative care has not fully resolved symptoms and imaging/clinical exam supports a focal target.
• Tendon pathology: considered when tendon pain persists despite loading modification and rehab; Ostenil Tendon may be discussed for peritendinous use when clinically indicated.
What to expect at your appointment
1. Assessment: focused history, clinical exam, and review of imaging if available.
2. Discussion: explanation of likely benefits, limitations, alternatives (physiotherapy, orthotics, steroid injection, surgery).
3. Procedure: The procedure will be undertaken with local anaesthetic to minimise pain, guided by ultrasound for accuracy and to reduce risk of injury and is completed on an outpatient basis with brief observation to ensure smooth recovery.
4. Aftercare: short rest, avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours, follow‑up arranged as required.
Risks and limitations
• Common: temporary soreness, local swelling, bruising.
• Less common: transient increase in pain, no improvement
• Rare: infection, allergic reaction
• Limitations: Results differ between people — some get significant pain relief, others notice only small changes. We won’t promise a cure, but we will explain other options so you can choose the best path for you.
FAQ
• Is this licensed for the foot and ankle — Some uses are off‑label; we will explain this and obtain consent.
• How many injections are needed — Depends on product and site; Ostenil Plus can be used in single‑injection protocols at the ankle; small‑joint regimens vary.
• Will it fix the problem — It aims to reduce pain and improve function; structural problems may still need other treatments.
• Can I have orthotics or rehab with injections — Yes; combined care often gives better outcomes.
