Achilles Pain
Achilles pain is a common issue that causes discomfort, tightness or stiffness at the back of the heel or lower calf. Symptoms often appear during walking, running or first thing in the morning, and can range from a mild pull to more persistent, activity‑limiting pain.
Many people notice stiffness when getting out of bed, discomfort during exercise or a gradual build‑up of tightness through the tendon. The area may feel tender to touch, warm or thickened, especially if the tendon has been irritated for a while.
Common causes include increased activity, reduced calf strength, changes in footwear, tightness through the calf muscles or altered foot posture. Symptoms may develop gradually over time or follow a sudden increase in load such as more walking, running or hill work.
An assessment helps identify which part of the tendon is irritated, how the lower limb is loading and what’s contributing to the discomfort. This may include reviewing movement, strength, footwear, walking patterns and any relevant medical history.
Treatment usually focuses on reducing irritation, improving tendon strength and helping the area tolerate load more comfortably. This may involve activity guidance, strengthening, stretching, footwear changes, insoles or other targeted approaches depending on your goals.
If symptoms have lasted more than a few weeks, are affecting your day, or keep returning, an assessment can help you understand what’s going on and what will help it improve.
